Scottish Traditional Music Workshop
Introduction to Traditional Scottish Tunes: Let’s Play for Dancers
With Mary Abdill accompanied by Jenny Evans
Learn tunes traditionally played for Scottish Ceilidh dances and more. Tunes will be taught during the first half of the class, and then played in the second half as a Scottish jam (i.e., session).
If you don’t know a reel from a strathspey, you will by the end of the workshop.
Age 14 and up. We encourage young people to come, but if you are under 21, you will need to be accompanied by an adult over 21 in order to enter the building.
Musicians should be intermediate level and up, but advanced beginners are welcome as well.
Acoustic instruments only. No amplification. For example: Strings (fiddle, cello, bass, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, etc.), winds (e.g., recorders, flutes, tin whistles), bodhràn, accordion, concertina, piano, etc.
Sheet music provided. Be prepared to transpose if sheet music is not in the key of your instrument. The teacher will teach the melodies using concertina and piano and will teach rhythm backups using piano.
Admission: $35 for members; $40 for non-members for each day’s workshop.

Mary Abdill Bio
Musician and dance instructor Mary Abdill has been dancing Scottish ceilidh and Scottish country dancing for many decades. She has a full teaching certificate from the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Her first examiner was Dr. Jean Milligan, cofounder of the Scottish Country Dance Society in 1923. You might know Mary, as she regularly calls and plays the piano/keyboard at the ceilidh dances at the New York Caledonian Club's annual Burns Supper. She is the current band leader for the Contrapolitans contra dance band and for the LITMA contra dance band, and she regularly plays with the Princeton Country Dancers Pick-Up Band, as well as playing for various Scottish events.
